Extractions Q & A

What is an extraction?

An extraction is the professional removal of one or more of your teeth. While there are many benefits to keeping your natural tooth structures intact, there are some situations where it’s advisable to remove a tooth.

If you need an extraction, Dr. Muñiz and the board-certified and dual-degree oral and maxillofacial surgeons are experts in the procedure. They provide a VIP experience for tooth extractions, and can ensure that your treatment will be safe and produce excellent results.

When would I need an extraction?

There are a few situations where it might be preferable to extract a tooth. If you have a tooth with damage or decay not treatable with a root canal, for example, it might be more beneficial to your oral health to remove the tooth and replace it with a high-quality dental implant.

One of the more common reasons for extraction is to remove a wisdom tooth. Your wisdom teeth are your third set of molars that typically come in around your late teens or early twenties.

Because our jaws have become smaller over the course of our evolution, many people no longer have enough room in their mouth to accommodate their wisdom teeth, leaving them to get stuck or impacted beneath their gums or jawbone. Impacted wisdom teeth can be painful and can lead to infection or damage of nearby teeth, so it’s usually best to remove them.

Another reason that you might need an extraction is if you want to get dentures, but still have some natural teeth in your mouth. You can extract any remaining teeth to make room for your dentures.

What happens when I get an extraction?

The details of your extraction depend on whether the tooth has erupted through your gumline. If your tooth is exposed, Dr. Muñiz removes it with a simple extraction, in which he simply uses a tool called an elevator to rock the tooth back and forth until it’s loose enough to pull out with a pair of forceps.

If your tooth is stuck underneath your gum or jawbone, Dr. Muñiz performs a surgical extraction. This requires him to make an incision in your gums and jawbone and expose your tooth before removing it. In some cases, he might section your tooth before removing it, which involves cutting or breaking it up into smaller pieces that are easier to pull out.
